An exhibition of paintings by Scott Indrisek

I’m sitting here in Bedford-Stuyvesant surrounded by all these cats, all their fluctuating faces: Zonk-eyed, half-stoned, anxious, leonine, frisky, coyly come hither, pleading, prissy, proud. The bulk of the summer has been spent painting these felines, mostly in a tiny Brooklyn backyard, mostly eaten alive by mosquitos.

Everything started casually enough—two canvases left, unsigned, in my building’s hallway, curious if any stranger-neighbors would adopt. (They did.) More followed, and followed, and followed. The cats in question came from everywhere, by which I mostly mean the Internet. They were all drawn freehand, my facility with line and whisker improving incrementally as the project proceeded. Certain canvases were globbed or sprayed with paint, collaged with kitten playing cards purchased last year in Greece, one week before the economy there officially imploded.

Now they’re out of my paws, and into yours. None have been declawed or spayed; no one has had their shots. They should ideally be kept in a group—there’s nothing as sad as a lonely cat. Stare long and hard into their wobbly eyes; cue the Talking Heads: “I’m just an animal, looking for a home…” Cue the angry guy on Twitter wondering why an island in crisis has time for such frivolity. Breathe deep and relax until all you’ve got is one shallow, unfurling purr. Someone wants their belly rubbed. -s.i.
